Reading Room,

Leadership is Language: The Hidden Power of What You Say and What You Don’t – L. David Marquet, 2020

As former US Navy commanding officer, David Marquet understands a thing or two about leadership. His first book, Turn the Ship Around, was a worldwide success.

As former US Navy commanding officer, David Marquet understands a thing or two about leadership. His first book, Turn the Ship Around, was a worldwide success within the business community, and his second, Leadership is Language, doesn’t disappoint.

As communication enthusiasts, we were fascinated to read Marquet’s exploration of modern business language. With so much of it still rooted in the now desperately outdated industrial era of the early 20th Century, it’s no wonder employee disengagement is such a global issue.

Leadership is Language offers a step-by-step guide for embracing collective intelligence in the 2020s. It focuses on autonomy and diversity of thinking, rather than traditional command and control practices.

With real life examples of the limitations of compliance-based business language, Marquet presents a new vocabulary to underpin success outcomes in the age of continuous change.
